Our Story

Our thoughtful, scientific approach to climate resilient woodland creation and biodiversity enhancement is what sets us apart, and it runs through the core of the net-zero outcomes we deliver.

WE LAUNCHED THE BUSINESS TO ENSURE THAT WE PLAY OUR PART IN RESTORING THE BALANCE OF OUR PLANET

Our approach hugely contrasts the 45% of new forest creation that are set to be monoculture plantations scheduled for felling (Nature Journal, 2019), the short tenure of which limits the sustainability of biodiversity and carbon capture.

OUR PLAN FOR CREATING CLIMATE RESILIENT WOODLAND

As a Somerset-born enterprise, we chose to start on our doorstep with a rolling hillside in Croscombe, Wells. We’re now securing further sites across the South West with ongoing expansion planned throughout the UK.

Over the next several years, we’ll be creating hundreds of acres of climate resilient woodland, regenerating biodiversity in expansive areas across the country.

Our plans also include securing existing woodland so it can be restored, preserved and protected. All for the benefit of the planet and future generations.

Where permissions are available, sites will be open to the public and designed to provide an educational experience on climate change and sustainability.

OUR APPROACH TO CLIMATE RESILIENT WOODLAND CREATION

Improving biodiversity through climate resilient woodland creation is a complex science that demands qualified experience and a thoughtful approach, with one eye on the future.

Traceability

It’s important to know that not all woodland creation is the same. We are the supply chain from end to end. We manage all of the sites, buy the trees and new flora seed, then crucially commit to look after them. It isn’t just about the now, most importantly it’s about the future.

Transparency

We focus on delivering the right customer experience for our partners and clients. We keep you involved every step of the way. Working with us means working directly with our dedicated, expert team. Pick up the phone and it’s us answering the call and us answering your questions.

Trust

It’s simple, we’re forestry and carbon offset experts with well established hands-on experience. We know that every tree planted must be the right species in the right place; should be climate resilient, avoid damage to sensitive ecosystems and improve existing biodiversity.

OUR VALUES

Through a
different lens

We know that powerful leadership can mean looking at things differently, which in turn often means clearing the path for a new way of thinking, and of doing. We like to shake things up and embrace a different perspective to challenge convention.

Be proactive

Our team is a determined group. If we have an idea, we like to get on and do it because ultimately, people believe in what you do, not what you say.

Anchored to the facts

Passion is important to keep the climate crisis at the forefront, attract critical resources (and valuable headlines). We also like to fly the flag for science as when we can assuredly define the problem, it is much more straightforward to find the solution.

Deliver with transparency

Our reputation is as important to us as it is to you. What really matters to us above all else is restoring native climate resilient woodland, repairing local ecosystems, and regenerating biodiversity. You can always trust us to deliver on our promises with sincerity.

OUR TEAM

When we launched, we knew that we wanted a team of experts in their respective fields. This meant throwing the net wide and complementing our local team with international capabilities. That’s why, as well as having our primary office in Clifton Bristol, we run a virtual office and are generally straddling at least two time zones.

For client meetings, we’re always happy to work remotely using the best that modern technology has to offer. In this way, we work just as efficiently whilst protecting the environment.

FAQ'S

At Wanderlands we are a Project Developer and Professional Services Consultancy for carbon offsetting through natural solutions. We cover all aspects of the supply chain from initial carbon footprint assessment to provision of a variety of solutions, and in doing so we can ensure quality and posterity across all of our work. We can also develop climate resilient woodland solutions to address your biodiversity footprint and deliver net gain outcomes.

Trees are very sensitive to being transplanted and can only be planted when they are dormant during the ‘tree planting season.’ This usually runs from November to March.

This all depends on the type of tree and the climate conditions it’s exposed to. But with some species, you could feasibly walk under the canopy after around ten years. You’ll see signs of life from around six weeks when we plant the ‘whips’. At that point, the saplings will be around 2ft.

This won’t (necessarily) be a uniform ‘line upon line’ of neat trees. Our planting is not a commercial forestry scheme but a part of nature, and as nature intended.

These will all be protected. Working with the ecosystems already in place underpins our wider philosophy and ethos.

We’re certainly in agreement with the principles of rewilding though we orientate ourselves more towards the principles of biodiversity. So with the right sites, yes, we actively encourage natural tree and shrub regeneration, and this effectively ‘rewilds’ it. Given that a genetic seed bank is as local as you can get, this approach ensures climate resilience woodlands as well as ecological support.

One of the wonderful things about trees is that you can plant anywhere! Our options include small woodland groves and pockets of so-called micro forests. We’d be happy to discuss.

We primarily grow British species. However, we also need to think about growing a percentage of species to ensure that all our trees thrive in an increasingly warmer British climate. Therefore, we’re continually working with nurseries who are able to grow non-UK natives from seed, in order to support climate resilient woodland creation.

Always. If a forest only has one species, then a species-specific disease could threaten the whole plantation. Research clearly shows that biodiverse forests are genetically more resilient, can sequester more carbon and are better for wildlife than a monoculture forest.

We’d love to hear from you.
